ASTM A269 TP304L Tube (Pipe) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless
steel seamless or welded tubing designed for general corrosion-resisting
and low- to high-temperature service applications. TP304L is the
low-carbon version of TP304, containing a maximum of 0.035% carbon
to reduce the risk of sensitization during welding.
Manufactured in accordance with ASTM A269 specifications, TP304L
tubing is supplied in the annealed condition and is widely used in
instrumentation, process piping, and hygienic applications. The
reduced carbon content minimizes chromium carbide precipitation
in the heat-affected zone, thereby improving resistance to
intergranular corrosion in welded structures. Although commonly
referred to as “pipe,” ASTM A269 technically covers stainless
steel tubing.
Difference Between TP304 and TP304L
- TP304 Carbon Content: Maximum 0.08%
- TP304L Carbon Content: Maximum 0.035%
The lower carbon content in TP304L significantly reduces carbide
precipitation during welding, improving long-term corrosion
resistance in fabricated and welded assemblies.
Key Features of ASTM A269 TP304L
-
Low Carbon Content
Minimizes intergranular corrosion by preventing
chromium carbide formation during welding.
-
Enhanced Weldability
Suitable for extensive welding operations
without the need for post-weld heat treatment
in most applications.
-
Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Provides reliable resistance to atmospheric
and moderately corrosive chemical environments.
-
Good Mechanical Strength
Maintains adequate tensile and yield strength
for structural and process applications.
-
ASTM A269 Compliance
Manufactured in accordance with ASTM A269
requirements for seamless and welded
austenitic stainless steel tubing.
