ASTM A249 TP304L Tube (Pipe) is a low-carbon welded austenitic
stainless steel tube manufactured for boilers, superheaters,
heat exchangers, and condensers. TP304L is the low-carbon
version of TP304, specifically designed to reduce the risk of
intergranular corrosion after welding.
With a maximum carbon content of 0.035%, TP304L minimizes
chromium carbide precipitation during welding, improving
corrosion resistance in welded structures. Manufactured
under ASTM A249 specifications, these tubes are supplied
in the welded and heat-treated condition to meet mechanical
and metallurgical requirements. Although commonly referred
to as “pipe” in trade terminology, ASTM A249 technically
covers welded stainless steel tubes.
Difference Between TP304 and TP304L
- TP304 Carbon Content: Maximum 0.08%
- TP304L Carbon Content: Maximum 0.035%
The lower carbon content in TP304L significantly reduces
sensitization during welding, making it more suitable for
applications involving heavy fabrication and welded joints.
Key Features of ASTM A249 TP304L
-
Enhanced Weldability
Low carbon content minimizes carbide formation at
welded joints, improving corrosion resistance
in fabricated assemblies.
-
Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Provides strong resistance to atmospheric corrosion,
oxidation, and mildly aggressive chemicals in
both oxidizing and moderately reducing environments.
-
Reliable High Temperature Performance
Maintains mechanical strength and oxidation resistance
in elevated temperature service such as boilers
and heat exchanger systems.
-
Good Fabrication Properties
Offers excellent formability and is widely used
where extensive welding is required.
-
Standard Compliance
Manufactured in accordance with ASTM A249
requirements for welded austenitic stainless
steel boiler and heat exchanger tubes.
