ASTM A270 TP304L Tube (Pipe) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless
steel sanitary tubing designed for hygienic applications requiring
high corrosion resistance and excellent weldability. TP304L contains
a maximum of 0.035% carbon, which reduces the risk of sensitization
and intergranular corrosion after welding.
Manufactured in accordance with ASTM A270 specifications, TP304L
tubing is supplied in seamless or welded form with polished internal
and external finishes suitable for sanitary service. The reduced
carbon content allows welded structures to maintain corrosion
resistance in the heat-affected zone, making it ideal for food,
dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. Although commonly
referred to as “pipe,” ASTM A270 technically covers sanitary tubing.
Difference Between TP304 and TP304L
- TP304 Carbon Content: Maximum 0.08%
- TP304L Carbon Content: Maximum 0.035%
The lower carbon content in TP304L significantly minimizes carbide
precipitation during welding, ensuring improved corrosion resistance
in fabricated sanitary systems.
Key Features of ASTM A270 TP304L
-
Low Carbon Composition
Reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion
and improves long-term durability in
welded assemblies.
-
Enhanced Weldability
Maintains corrosion resistance in
heat-affected zones without the need
for post-weld heat treatment in most cases.
-
Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Suitable for sanitary environments
exposed to cleaning agents and
mild processing chemicals.
-
Sanitary Surface Finish
Available in polished finishes such as
180 grit, 320 grit, and higher finishes
to meet hygienic industry standards.
-
ASTM A270 Compliance
Produced according to ASTM A270
requirements for seamless and welded
austenitic stainless steel sanitary tubing.
