ASTM A213 TP316L Tube is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel
seamless tube designed for high-temperature and high-pressure service.
It is the low-carbon version of TP316 stainless steel and contains
molybdenum, which enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion,
especially in chloride-rich environments.
With a maximum carbon content of 0.035%, TP316L offers improved weldability
and superior resistance to intergranular corrosion compared to standard TP316.
Manufactured under ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 specifications, TP316L tubes are
widely used in boilers, heat exchangers, condensers, and process piping systems.
Although commonly referred to as “pipe” in trade terminology, ASTM A213
technically covers seamless stainless steel tubes.
Difference Between TP316 and TP316L
- TP316 Carbon Content: Maximum 0.08%
- TP316L Carbon Content: Maximum 0.035%
The lower carbon content in TP316L minimizes chromium carbide precipitation
during welding, reducing the risk of sensitization and intergranular corrosion
in welded structures.
Key Features of ASTM A213 TP316L
-
Optimized Chemical Composition
Contains 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, 2–3% molybdenum,
and low carbon (≤ 0.035%) for enhanced corrosion resistance
and weld performance.
-
Excellent Weldability
Can be welded without post-weld heat treatment in most
applications, making it ideal for fabrication-intensive projects.
-
Superior Corrosion Resistance
Offers strong resistance to chlorides, seawater exposure,
industrial chemicals, and acidic environments.
-
Reliable Mechanical Strength
Designed to withstand pressure and elevated temperature
conditions in demanding industrial environments.
-
High Temperature Performance
Maintains oxidation resistance and structural stability
in boilers and heat exchanger systems.
