What are 317 and 317L stainless steels?
Grades 317 and 317L are austenitic stainless steels that resemble 316 and 316L but contain more molybdenum. A typical composition includes about 18 to 20 percent chromium, 11 to 15 percent nickel and 3 to 4 percent molybdenum. That extra molybdenum is the key difference, because it improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
The “L” in 317L stands for low carbon. Keeping carbon lower, at a maximum of about 0.035 percent, reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. This helps preserve corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone, which is why 317L is the usual choice for welded fabrication.
