SA179 / ASME SA179 Seamless Tubes for Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers, condensers and feedwater heaters depend on thin-walled tubes that transfer heat efficiently and hold up under continuous thermal cycling. For this duty, SA 179 (ASTM A179) is the standard specification for cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes. This guide covers what SA179 tubes offer, how they are tested and where they are used.

What Is ASME SA179?

ASME SA179 is the pressure-vessel version of ASTM A179. It covers minimum-wall-thickness seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer equipment. Because the tubes are seamless and cold drawn, they have a smooth surface, tight dimensional tolerances and consistent wall thickness. These qualities matter for even heat transfer and for a leak-tight fit in tube sheets.

The specification covers small-diameter tubing, typically from about 1/8 inch up to 3 inches outside diameter, in a range of wall thicknesses specified in BWG or millimetres.

Chemical Composition

ASME SA 179 seamless tubes are made from low-carbon steel with tightly controlled chemistry:

  • Carbon: 0.06–0.18%
  • Manganese: 0.27–0.63%
  • Phosphorus: 0.035% max
  • Sulphur: 0.035% max

The low carbon content gives good ductility and cold-working behaviour. That is important when tubes must be expanded into tube sheets or bent into U-tubes without cracking.

Mechanical Properties

PropertyRequirement
Tensile strength325 MPa (47 ksi) min
Yield strength180 MPa (26 ksi) min
Elongation35% min
Hardness72 HRB max

The relatively low hardness is deliberate. It allows the tubes to be rolled or expanded into tube sheets and formed into U-bends easily.

Manufacturing and Testing

SA179 tubes are made seamless and cold finished, then heat treated by annealing (or subcritical annealing) to relieve stresses from cold drawing. Required tests include:

  • Flattening test to check ductility
  • Flaring test to confirm the tube end can be expanded
  • Hardness test
  • Hydrostatic or non-destructive electric test on every tube

Dimensional tolerances follow ASTM A450 / SA450 general requirements. When ordering, specify whether the wall is minimum wall or average wall, as this affects both pressure rating and price.

SA179 vs. Other Heat Exchanger Tube Grades

Buyers often compare SA179 with other tube specifications:

  • SA192: seamless carbon steel boiler tubes, mainly for high-pressure boiler service.
  • SA210 Gr. A1: medium-carbon boiler and superheater tubes with higher strength.
  • SA213: seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy tubes for boilers and heat exchangers, used where corrosion or temperature demands exceed carbon steel.
  • SA214: electric-resistance-welded carbon steel heat exchanger tubes, a lower-cost welded alternative.

SA179 remains the standard, economical choice for moderate-temperature, non-corrosive or mildly corrosive heat-transfer service. For aggressive media, consider stainless options such as ASTM A213 or A249 tubes.

Key Applications of SA179 Tubes

  • Shell-and-tube heat exchangers in refineries and petrochemical plants
  • Surface condensers and feedwater heaters in power stations
  • Air-cooled heat exchangers and oil coolers
  • Boiler economisers and low-temperature heat-recovery units
  • HVAC, chillers and industrial process heating systems
  • Fertiliser, sugar, paper and chemical process equipment

Procurement Checklist for SA179 Tubes

To avoid delays and rework on bulk orders, define these points in your enquiry:

  1. Specification: ASME SA179 or ASTM A179, with edition where relevant
  2. Outside diameter, wall thickness and length (including whether straight or U-bend)
  3. Minimum wall or average wall
  4. Required certificates (MTC EN 10204 3.1, and any customer-specific test reports)
  5. Third-party inspection requirements
  6. End finish, surface protection and packing (bundled, capped, oiled or varnished for export)
  7. Quantity and delivery schedule

Clear enquiries lead to accurate quotations and shorter lead times.
